This is the place (the land lot and the residential buildings) of the noble Moigis, a wealthy family of late 19th century. The manor was built by Tadas Anupras Moigis, the doctor at the county’s real school.
Since 1925, the manor has been hosting the Museum of Regional Studies, one of the oldest regional museums in Lithuania. At that time, the museum had roughly 2,000 exhibits, the figure that went up to 12,000 by 1939 and now totals around 98,160 objects on display. The exhibits include an exposition of the bugs of the world by the naturalist Valerijonas Straševičius, one of the largest of its kind in Lithuania, as well as displays of archaeological, ethnographic, historical items from the 12th–20th century, among other things. The museum also stages shows, educational programs and many other events. The museum is situated in the city’s oldest building, which actually houses the exposition.
