Kaunas District Municipality

Kaunas district is one of the largest and one the most densely populated districts in the country. Its territory is 1496 km², population – around 100 000.

Kaunas district – Lithuania‘s green emerald, located in the very center of the country. Here history expressively bounds with beautiful nature and cultural heritage. The architectural masterpieces such as the 16th century gothic St John the Baptist Church in Zapyškis, the 17th century Raudondvaris manor ensemble or Žemaitkiemis (Babtynas) estate recall grand history of Kaunas district. Beautiful mounds unveil hundreds of years of history and secrets, meanwhile historical memory comes alive in a number of museums and monuments to heros.

Kaunas district invites to a number of unique and interesting events. Every May hundreds of colourful kites dot the sky near Zapyškis St John the Baptist church. Today festival “Between Earth and Sky“, organized since 2006, is the biggest event of its kind, and has already earned Zapyškis the name of Lithuanian capital of kites.

Every July for one night Kulautuva town becomes a capital of bards. Surrounded by pine trees bard music festival “Akacijų alėja“ attracts thousands of visitors every year, willing to admire live music, sounds of guitar and sincere performances of artists.

Plenty of events take place in Raudondvaris manor every year – an impressive celebration of the Statehood day, autumn harvest festival “Rudens sambariai“, meanwhile in winter season here glows the main Christmas tree of Kaunas district.

Kaunas district together with Kaunas city were chosen as European Capital of Culture 2022.

Nature lovers will admire Kaunas district. Wonderful curves and valleys of three longest Lithuanian rivers – Nemunas, Neris and Nevėžis, landscape of Kaunas Lagoon Regional Park and untouched nature attract the eye. Arlaviškės Juniper Valley, Žiegdždriai geological and Dubrava minor reservation cognitive trails are more and more visited by travellers every year. Those who enjoy long walks in nature should not bypass the Springs‘ path in Kačerginė, wellness trail in Kulautuva and Jadagoniai ecological trails.

One can discover cultural and natural heritage of Kaunas district, while travelling by boat along the Nemunas and the Nevėžis rivers. By boat you can reach famous interwar resort towns Kulautuva and Kačerginė or Raudondvaris manor.

The most beautiful places in Kaunas district can be explored by bike as well. Well-developed bicycle infrastructure provides ideal conditions to reach Kačerginė or Kulautuva towns.
